Photo Inspired by Numbers 32:13-15

13 The LORD’s anger burned against Israel and he made them wander in the desert forty years, until the whole generation of those who had done evil in his sight was gone.
14 “And here you are, a brood of sinners, standing in the place of your fathers and making the LORD even more angry with Israel. 15 If you turn away from following him, he will again leave all this people in the desert, and you will be the cause of their destruction.”

A reading of the Bible includes Numbers 32:13-15, narrated by Max McLean, with a complete reading of the entire Bible over the course of twelve months.

These verses resonate with me. They remind me of the destruction of Israel in Numbers 32, which inspired for me this photo of shopping carts by the side of a street. In the photo, few people are on hand who need them. As the shopping carts speak to absence, so too in Numbers 32 it is recounted how the Israelites are lost for so long that a generation was lost.

Reminders that the Lord is a vengeful deity are important because it is known today that Earth as we understand it may be at a crossroads for future generations. If Numbers 32:13-15 recalls the Lord’s burning anger at Israel, it is important that we remain optimistic but realistic about future generations of human beings surviving.

What’s relevant, I decided to argue about the photo I have taken, is that the shopping carts have been abandoned by the shoppers who filled them. Likewise in Numbers 32:13-15, Israel lost an entire generation by resisting the influence upon them by the Lord.
